🇺🇸 From Cartoons to Conversation: My Journey to English Fluency How I accidentally became an English Assistant—and why games were better than textbooks.

Every language learner has a story. Mine started when I was six, not with flashcards, but with a rebellious shift from piano lessons to a glowing computer screen. This journey is a testament to the power of immersion and finding unexpected ways to learn. 1. The Passive Immersion Phase (Ages 6-14) My language journey began at age six, passively absorbing English from Cartoon Network and Boomerang. The real shift came a year later: my brother received a computer, and I received a piano. The piano quickly bored me, but the computer captivated me. I had the "luck" that, at the time, operating systems were primarily in English. My brain was naturally exposed to the language simply by navigating the system. This was amplified by computer games (where the only alternative to English was Russian, which I ignored). I absorbed vocabulary like a sponge, even while watching movies and series with Serbian subtitles. 2. The High School "Assistant" (The Unofficial Teaching Role) When high school started, I found myself in a class of absolute beginners. I was quickly upgraded from student to informal classroom assistant. One memorable moment occurred when I corrected my classmates' mistakes. They complained: "You are not our teacher! Who are you to correct us?" My amazing teacher simply smiled and said, "Just keep correcting them. I might as well rest my brain for a while!" It was a truly precious moment. The real test came during a school inspection. A superintendent asked for two students with the best English. My teacher immediately nominated Marina and me. While Marina spoke precisely but nervously, I began speaking fluidly and passionately. They literally had to interrupt me to ask a new question! I saw the surprised, yet amused, expression in their eyes—a look that said, "Too much information, slow down girl!" 3. Business English and Heavy Metal (The Academic Leap) My high school teacher was strict but brilliant, emphasizing Business English—which proved invaluable later on. University was easier, as most students were beginners. My professor was a queen! Since the material was simple for me, I pretended to take notes during lectures. In reality, I was writing down the lyrics of my favorite metal bands in English. She later admitted she noticed, but she didn't mind because I proved my knowledge during the exam. I spoke so passionately about my family, myself, and my ambitions that she laughed and said: "Okay, okay... I understand. You deserve a 10 and nothing less!" 4. The Italki Masterclass (Continuous Growth) I continued to build my English foundation by studying other languages through English, reading academic literature, and constantly talking to native speakers. However, the real peak of my fluency came when I started working on italki. Through continuous conversation and feedback from my students (mostly Americans), I learned a tremendous amount of new vocabulary and idioms—the true nuances of the language.
